Résumé
Energy use could be highly improved in the building sector. However, energy efficiency measures in buildings must not hinder the increasing exigencies of Indoor Air Quality and thermal comfort expected in occupied spaces. Space cooling in summer is gaining importance, with the consequent electric energy demand peaks. Within this situation, evaporative cooling systems arise among the strategies that can improve both energy efficiency and Indoor Climate Quality with nearly no energy consumption. The use of Direct Evaporative Coolers is nonetheless limited when aiming to condition indoor spaces, due to the restricted relative humidity levels required indoors. This problem can be easily overcome in appropriately ventilated spaces. This work presents the experimental measures performed in three case studies with portable Direct Evaporative Coolers: a residential indoor space, a shop and a bar. Indoor comfort conditions achieved have been evaluated. Moreover, results obtained have shown to be helpful in proposing some guidelines to use these systems indoors with appropriate performance, in terms of the design of the ventilation and the intermittent or continuous operation of the system.
