One of the aims of the European policy is to increase building energy performance both for new buildings and major renovations of existing ones. In order to reduce the building energy demand the design of the building envelope becomes increasingly important and in particular for the roof component. The energy performance of these elements can be calculated but the behavior under real conditions is not known well enough. In the present paper, the results of an extended series of in situ measurements collected on different full scale roofs are presented and the evaluation of component thermal conductance by means of standard approaches is carried out with the objective of identifying the reliability of the two calculation procedures from ISO 9869 [1]. The object of the monitoring are pitched roofs, covering single residential houses in Northern Italy. To extend the representativeness of the results, the experimental tests are carried out on different roof typologies. Either concrete roof and lightweight timber constructions are monitored as well as different insulation solutions (i.e. wood fiber and EPS coupled with multifoil reflective insulation) are analyzed. For each roof, the surface temperature and the heat flux (both on the internal and external surfaces) were measured at intervals of 10 minutes for a long period. The data collected was post-processed to obtain some information about the influence of time-constants, equations number, length of the measurement period on the conductance value estimated by the dynamic method described in the Standard.
