Résumé

The shift towards low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants and the phase-out of high-GWP refrigerants such as R410A and R134a have driven the development of alternatives like R290, R454A, R454B, R1234yf, and various blends for heat pump applications. To characterize the performance of the next generation compressors with flammable low-GWP refrigerants, extensive experimental support is required. To facilitate this effort, this study focuses on the development of a residential scale, economized compressor load stand capable of testing flammable low-GWP refrigerants with a compressor capacity ranging from 3.5 to 11 kW (1 to 5 tons), compliant with ASHRAE Standard 23 (2022). The operational capability of the load stand is testing refrigerants at saturated evaporating temperatures as low as -34.4 ◦C (-30◦F) and saturated condensing temperature up to 60 ◦C (140◦F). Component and tubing sizes were selected based on results of a thermodynamic model of the hot gas bypass cycle, developed in Engineering Equation Solver (EES). The load stand was first commissioned with a scroll compressor with known data. Then a One-Factor-At-a-Time (OFAT) design of experiment is employed to collect 17 datapoints with a vapor-injected scroll compressor using R410A and R454B refrigerants. Future work includes automation to enhance the data acquisition efficiency and incorporate additional safety measure to test A3 class refrigerants, testing the limits of the load stand, positioning this load stand as a vital tool for testing flammable low-GWP refrigerants and multiple compressor technologies.
