Résumé
This paper describes a thermal insulation design and experimental results for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) floating magnet in the Ring Trap 1 (RT-1) project. RT-1 is a device for the purpose of high-beta plasma confinement research at the University of Tokyo. The HTS magnet in a persistent current mode is levitated during a plasma experiment. The magnet mainly consists of an HTS coil, a radiation shield and a vacuum vessel. The HTS coil and the radiation shield are initially cooled down to a level of 20 K by an external cooling system through detachable transfer tubes which are separated from the magnet during the plasma experiment. The experiment can be continued until the temperature of the HTS coil reaches 35 K, which is the upper operation temperature limit. The performance of the thermal insulation is an important criterion to lengthen the plasma experiment period. It took about 6.5 hours for the coil temperature to reach 30 K in a verification test of the thermal insulation performance and a comparison to a calculation result was shown. The magnet was successfully levitated and the first plasma was also obtained.
