Development of zero ODP, low TEWI, binary, ternary and quaternary mixtures to replace HCFC-22 in window air conditioner.

Résumé

Due to ecological problems like ozone depletion and global warming, certain refrigerants like R-22 have to be replaced. Alternative refrigerants like R-407C, R-410A and R-417 are having high TEWI values compared to R-22. Pure HFCs are having some disadvantages like flammability, miscibility, etc. In this paper, an attempt is made to find new alternatives for R-22 by considering flammability, azeotropic behaviour, miscibility with lubricant oil, thermodynamic properties, and performance parameters of window air conditioners. By comparing the performance parameters like discharge temperature, COP, TEWI, displacement volume, etc. it is recommended to use the binary mixture R-32/R-134a with POE oil & ASHRAE flammability category 1 or ternary mixture R-32/R-134a/R-290 with mineral oil & ASHRAE flammability category 2 as drop in substitute for R-22 in window air-conditioner with modification only in capillary.
