Résumé
Chiller development has undergone significant changes in order to meet the various regulations. The Montreal protocol calls for the phase out of ozone depleting substances. This resulted in a shift in Chiller refrigerants from CFCs to HCFCs to now HFCs, where currently R134a is the most widely used refrigerant in centrifugal chiller applications. The Kyoto protocol has also highlighted the issue of global warming. Refrigerants like HFCs are once more under scrutiny because of their radiative properties that make them potentially Global Warming agents. The F-gas regulation in Europe has been reviewed. It calls for a ban of High GWP refrigerants in certain applications, and a phase down of HFCs consumption based on their CO2 equivalent. Strickter F-gas legislation s are already in place in Switzerland. The ORRChim regulation has been revised for installation with 400kW or more. Only fluids with GWP<10 are allowed for such capacity requirements. This limit has a direct implication for chiller installation in Switzerland. A new generation of refrigerants that have GWP =<1 while exhibiting the high efficiencies associated with HFCs, has been developed. These new refrigerants are now being used in Low and medium pressure centrifugal chillers with very promising results. The paper reviews this shift in refrigerant technology for centrifugal chillers leading to new chillers applications that have no ozone depleting and no direct global warming impact on the environment.
