Résumé
The adsorption heat exchanger (AdHEX) is the core component of an adsorption heat pump or chiller. The development of new adsorber concepts requires specific experimental activities aimed to assess the heat and mass transfer properties of the combined system “sorbent material & heat exchanger” as well as to measure dynamically its global performance under typical operating conditions. Both, Fraunhofer ISE and CNR-ITAE laboratories are equipped with experimental test facilities for the characterisation of small-scale adsorbers with different focus. The CNR-ITAE testing set-up is able to measure performance in terms of coefficient of performance for cooling (cooling COP) and delivered cooling power under real conditions for HVAC applications. The measurement of performance is based on an energy balance of the main components. The Fraunhofer ISE facility bases the operation on the measurement of the water uptake of the AdHEX by direct weight measurement. This gives precise values of adsorbed water vapour over time, but no realistic adsorption/desorption cycles can be investigated (no realistic COP) as only one heat exchanger serves both as evaporator and condenser. This work aims at a discussion of the main features of the two methods for the characterisation of small AdHEXs and to show how the two techniques could be properly combined and integrated to obtain an exhaustive and accurate testing procedure which helps to find the relevant parameters for the optimization of AdHEXs.
