Résumé

In this paper we aim to study the exchange flow between an attached solarium/greenhouse and its adjacent building zone. The temperature difference between such zones produces buoyancy forces that drive the flow. The two zones are connected through a common vertical doorway. By opening the doorway a two-layer exchange flow develops between the two zones. By action of the buoyancy forces a horizontal gravity current flows from the zone initially contained cold air towards the zone initially contained warm air. At the same time, a buoyant plume of the warm air ascends vertically into the cold zone. The interaction of the plume and its cold ambient results in a non-trivial temperature stratification on the cold zone which is fed by the exchange flow properties at the doorway. In the meanwhile, the gravity current reflects from the end wall and after a finite time arrives at the doorway and alters the nature of the exchange flow substantially. Consequently, the dynamics of the two confined zones exchanging mass and heat are highly coupled. Moreover, we analyze the effects of the architectural parameters on the exchange flow properties. Similitude laboratory experiments are carried out for validating the model. Also, the well-mixed model is employed for describing the exchange flow properties and compared with present model. Better understanding of the exchange flow between the building zones enhances our insight towards the passive solar design and paves the way for healthier design of the buildings and achieving NZEBs performance.
