Résumé

Due to the Kyoto protocol globally room air-conditioner manufacturers are adopting HC-290 as one of the alternative refrigerants. HC-290 is highly flammable, imposing limitation on the charge quantity used in the room air-conditioner. Present study analyses Vapor compression cycle for refrigerant charge reduction. Variation of the geometric parameters for the condenser describes possible way to reduce charge. 5000 W cooling capacity and ISEER of 3.95 air-conditioner tested under psychometric test chamber is used as a base. Using ART simulation tool, parametric study conducted. The condenser needs redesign to reduce charge keeping same cooling capacity and EER. Condenser carries maximum charge in the cycle so design modifications are suggested. A falling film condenser is designed to achieve the same cooling capacity and EER with similar boundary conditions. By modification in the condenser, 12% refrigerant charge reduction is achieved compared to simulated base case.
