Résumé

The ageing effects due to the prolonged immersion of some refrigerant materials in a typical working fluid (water) have been investigated for a wide time span (ten months). The materials investigated, all working around room temperature, are Gd, the standard high magnetocaloric element, Gd(5)Si(1.9)Ge(2.1), the first giant magnetocaloric compound (but here with the use of commercial Gd) and the eutectic Gd(75)Cd(25) alloy, presenting an almost constant adiabatic temperature raise in an interesting temperature span (260-280 K). Results give evidence that corrosion affects the refrigerant properties of all the materials with an evident reduction of the adiabatic temperature raise, due to the oxidation of the surface of the material, while the effect on the refrigerant capacity Q is much less pronounced. The search for more inert working fluids with comparable thermal properties or the use of additives to decrease the corrosive properties of the fluids is suggested.
