Imagerie à sonde de Hall de propriétés spécifiques dans la transition d'antiferromagnétique à ferromagnétique dans le Gd(5)Ge(4).

Hall probe imaging of specific properties in the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition in Gd(5)Ge(4).

Résumé

The authors demonstrate the versatility of the scanning Hall probe system to image the spatially localized magnetic behavior in these important families of giant magnetocaloric (first order magnetic transition) materials. In particular they show that the scanning probe can be used to study the fraction of material remaining in antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature both by Hall imaging and a technique they call ac susceptibility imaging. They also show how we can study the spatial location of avalanche features that are manifest on the global magnetization - applied field (M-H) loop as sharp jumps in magnetization. Such information and particular the correlation with structural information such as grain size, defects and voids would be invaluable in the development of useful magnetocaloric materials. Their scanning Hall probe imaging technique gives an insight into the nucleation and growth process of the martensitic-like magneto-structural first order transition in Gd(5)Ge(4).
