Increased demand for eco-friendly electric vehicles has intensified efforts to overcome their limited driving range relative to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. However, these endeavors have resulted in elevated battery heat generation, thereby impacting performance and safety. Owing to its superior thermal efficiency, immersion cooling technology has been extensively studied with the aim of overcoming the limitations of conventional cooling methods. This study introduces a metal foam to enhance the cooling performance of a battery thermal management system by effectively utilizing the capabilities of the fluid. Metal foam-assisted immersion cooling achieves a maximum temperature of 38.3℃, surpassing pure immersion cooling (44.3℃) and conventional cooling (50.2℃). In contrast, the temperature difference decreased from 8 K (conventional) to 6 K (metal foam-assisted immersion). This study analyzed metal foam properties such as porosity, PPI, and material, emphasizing the selection of an appropriate foam. Considering various dielectric fluids, this study provides insights into the properties critical for immersion cooling performance, both with and without metal foam, through a fluid property sensitivity analysis.
