Résumé

A lot of research work has been done in order to understand the thermal and hydraulic behaviour of waterbased ice slurries in different apparatus, e.g. pipes, fittings and heat exchangers. The paper presents an approach to the problem how ice slurry fluidity in pipes and complex geometries can be evaluated. With the aim of a safe operating system, effects on particle morphology and its influence on pressure drop behaviour have to be considered. At first a population balance approach was used to understand and sketch the evolution of ice particle morphology during a storage cycle. A list of system parameters influencing particle morphology were identified and experimentally investigated. A standard stainless steel pipe as well as a new developed plate heat exchanger were used for the experiments. The results show the impact of different system parameters on pressure drop behaviour and could improve future planning of ice slurry based cooling networks.
