Résumé

The potential for improving occupants’ performance and perceived indoor environmental quality (PIEQ) with a desktop mounted personalized ventilation (PV) system is explored with comparison to an under-floor air distribution (UFAD) system in a simulated office space. The research was conducted with thirty-nine subjects performing a series of computerized surveys and tasks, including PIEQ and thermal comfort questionnaires, mood state evaluation surveys, creativity tasks (Compound Remote Associate (CRA), Alternative Uses Task (AUT), and Toy Construction Task (TCT)), and productivity tasks (typing and arithmetic addition tasks). Subjects were provided with either the desktop PV device supplying 100% fresh air with adjustable flow rate between 0 to 20 L/s per person or the UFAD system with an outdoor airflow rate of 5 L/s per person. Each test has two 2.5-hour test sessions with a 5 minute break in between. The indoor temperature, relative humidity (RH), and concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), total volatile organic compound (TVOC) were monitored throughout the entire experiment. Subjects self-assessed that perceptions on thermal comfort, air movement, inhaled air quality and air freshness were significantly improved when using PV device compared with UFAD system. Negative mood significantly decreased in the first half session when using PV device. CRA task performance was improved in the first task section but decreased in the second section. Subjects also typed slower but with higher accuracy when using PV devices. Overall, it indicated that short-term exposure using PV device improved certain self-evaluated perceptions but did not significantly improve tasks performance.
