Notes the problems posed by indoor air quality in housing and the necessity for clean ductwork for the HVAC unit. Describes a study to determine the effectiveness of three commercial HVAC duct cleaning processes in reducing airborne contamination of residential homes: 1) conventional vacuum cleaning; 2) compressed air sweeping, vacuum collection; and 3) mechanical brush method. Eight identical homes were selected at random. Three pairs of houses were cleaned by each procedure, with one pair as controls. All the homes had fibreglass duct material and the HVAC systems were very dirty. Finds the greatest reduction of dirt with 2). Fibreglass ductwork was not found to pose any special problem concerning liberation of fibres.
