Résumé

Among the different alternatives proposed in the automotive field to replace HFC134a, R1234yf is a new generation fluid which has recently gained great importance. This fluid has the advantage of having a low GWP and thermodynamic properties similar to HFC-134a, which allows introducing it in existing equipment without proceeding to a major redesign unlike other proposed environmentally clean alternatives such as CO2. Nevertheless, there is not enough comprehensive public documentation at the experimental level operation of this new refrigerant in real installations and the information about how to optimize the performance of equipment designed to work with R134a to work with R1234yf is limited. Even though the mentioned advantages of R1234yf, there is some criticism regarding the non-natural origin of the fluid and its possible long-term effects on the environment have not been studied yet. In that sense hydrocarbons and particularly R290 can be considered as a suitable alternative as it is natural, friendly for the environment and can fit the requirements of working with existing systems without introducing important changes. However, it has not been used for these applications up to now. This paper presents a comparative study between R1234yf, HFC134 and R290 for an open piston compressor at different operating conditions. The text matrix comprised two compressor speeds, evaporation temperatures from -15 to 15ºC and condensation temperatures from 40 to 65ºC. From these tests, the compressor behavior with these refrigerants has systematically been analyzed in terms of compressor efficiency, volumetric efficiency, losses to the ambient and oil-refrigerant properties.
