Résumé

The present work is aimed at characterizing the performance of automatic icemakers in household refrigerators by means of theoretical and experimental methods. In the experimental front, a closed-loop wind tunnel facility was assembled to emulate the refrigerator geometric and operating conditions by controlling the air flow and temperature in the test section, where the icemaker instrumented with thermocouples was positioned. Cooling and freezing curves were obtained for different ice cubes for two different trays, with 10 and 21 volumes, under different operating conditions (air flow rate ranging from 5 to 25 m³ h−1, and air temperature spanning from −25 to −5 °C). The theoretical front focused on modeling the solidification process to predict the ice production rate based on the operating conditions. For this purpose, an empirical correlation was advanced based on the experimental data, being able to predict the experimental counterparts with deviations within ±10% error bounds.
