Résumé

The incorporated compressor-expander mechanism is a useful method of recovering work from the expansion/throttling stage of a refrigeration cycle. This paper studies the rotary-vane compressor-expander with R-134a as the working refrigerant. To improve the mechanical efficiency of the compressor, a detailed mathematical model of the frictional forces is created. Viscous shear losses caused by the lubrication additives, vane tip frictional losses and sealing losses are mathematically modelled as functions of various fluid and geometrical parameters of the compressor-expander. Results from the model correlate well with the experimental data obtained. As such, the model can be used to achieve improvements in system efficiency. It is seen that for a certain maximum operating speed there is an optimum rotor end face clearance to use before the power loss due to viscous shear overcomes the power lost from leakage. Better internal lubrication is also observed to reduce the overall power consumption of the unit.
