Résumé
Refrigerating units operating with cascade cycles are considered a convenient solution in terms of safety and cost for applications demanding very low temperatures. The principle behind the cascade system relies on connecting two compression cycles via an intermediate heat exchanger and its theoretical performance justifies experimental trials. Tests conducted on a prototype operating with a cascade cycle using R404A as the high-temperature fluid and CO2 as the low-temperature fluid show COPtotal of 0.74. The use of CO2 as the low-temperature fluid is restricted to refrigeration cycles working at evaporation temperatures higher than -56.6°C, where its triple point is reached (Di Nicola et al., 2004). The aim of the present work was to quantify the performance of a cascade refrigeration cycle using a innovative natural refrigerant fluid binary system CO2+N2O in order to work to evaporating temperatures lower than -56.6°C (Kruse and Russman, 2006). Experiments have revealed the operation problems (Tzong-Shing Lee et al., 2006) and effective performance (Getu and Bansal, 2008) of a cascade cycle for freezing foodstuffs. The results obtained with CO2 and the CO2+N2O binary system are comparable with those achieved with R23.
