Résumé

An electric vehicle is an environment-friendly automobile which emits no tailpipe pollutant. It is driven by an electric motor powered by rechargeable battery packs. The conventional vehicle having an internal combustion engine usually heats internal cabin of the vehicle using waste heat from the engine. However, for the electric vehicle, an alternative solution for the heating is required because it does not have the combustion engine. Recently, a heat pump system, which is widely used for residential heating due to higher efficiency, has been studied for its use in the electric vehicle as a heating system. In this study, a heat pump system using waste heat from an electric motor and an inverter was investigated experimentally to examine the feasibility of the heat pump system in electric vehicles. The performance of the heat pump system was measured by varying the coolant inlet temperature and mass flow rate. The experimental results showed the heating capacity of 2.7 kW and COP of 3.1 at the rated operating conditions, which may suggest successful applications of the heat pump system into electric vehicles.
