Résumé

The natural refrigerant R1270 to replace R22 in residential air conditioner has been investigated experimentally in this paper. The thermophysical properties of R1270 and R22 have been compared firstly. R1270 offers a similar vapor pressure to R22 under same conditions, but has higher heat transfer coefficient, higher specific heat capacity, lower viscosity compared to R22, and its latent heat of vaporization is 1.88 times of that of R22. Two air conditioners with R1270 and one air conditioner with R22 as a reference unit have been tested under standard condition. R1270 has almost identical cooling capacity as compared to R22 under the same conditions, whereas the coefficient of performance (COP) of system with R1270 to replace R22 directly is 4.3% higher than that of R22 original system, and the COP of novel prototype air conditioner designed for R1270 is 12.3% higher than that of R22 system. As for the refrigerant charge, R1270 is 59% lower for the unit without modification and 69.3% lower for the unit designed for R1270 than that of R22. In addition, the compressor discharge temperature of R1270 of is about 8°C lower than that of R22 under the same condition. The experimental results show that R1270 is a potential natural alternative to replace R22 in residential air conditioners
