Résumé

Concerning the cooling supply for future applications, ice slurry technology is a safe, environmentally friendly and efficient solution for energy storage. Ice slurry is classified as a phase change material (PCM), which is used as a secondary refrigerant due to its high cooling capacity and flexibility in the application. A three-dimensional Euler-Euler granular multiphase turbulence CFD model was setup to consider the effects of particle collisions, drag, lift, turbulence dispersion and shear stress viscosity. The realizable k-ε turbulence model was found to be more suitable than the RNG k-ε turbulence model for the simulation of ice slurry inside specifically designed plate heat exchangers to obtain accurate numerical simulations in the fully developed turbulent flow. A comparison was carried out between the pressure drop resulting from the numerical solution and the experimental data. It was found that the numerical solutions agree well with the pressure drop measurements. The relative errors of the numerical results are within ±15 % in relation to the measurements. In this paper, the numerical investigations have mainly focused on illustrating the isothermal and the non-isothermal behaviour of ice slurry depending on various ice particle sizes, ice concentrations, and volume flow rates. The present work shows that the heat transfer performance of ice slurry is strongly dependent on the flow velocity, the ice mass fraction, and the temperature of the secondary fluid.
