As our society becomes more concerned about the quality of its environment, noisiness is coming to be an important consideration in the selection of mechanical equipment. This article presents a procedure for evaluating the noise from cooling towers to determine if the noise will be acceptable to the neighbors who live or work near the tower installation. The procedure consists of establishing the noise criterion for the cooling tower, estimating the noise levels that will be produced by the cooling tower and comparing the noise criterion with the expected noise levels to determine if the tower noise will be acceptable. It is a good reference guideline for design engineers and owners of high rise buildings.
