Résumé

Basic properties of cryogenic gases along with possible application of these gases in medicine are given in the first part of the article. The concept of cryotherapy is discussed. The effect of very low temperatures on the local and structural properties of organic tissue is presented in the article. Cryosurgical operation is described in the article along with brief characteristics of the methods applied: direct evaporation, spraying and direct-contact techniques. The effect of very low temperatures on human body tissue is also briefly presented in the article. (See also this Bulletin, reference 2005-2272.)
