Résumé
The simplest organic compounds are aliphatic hydrocarbons and they can take on an increasing amount of complexity as the number of carbon bonds increases. Many aliphatic hydrocarbons have not been assessed for use in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems beyond commonly available hydrocarbons used as fuels, like R-50 (methane), R-170 (ethane), R-290 (propane), R-600a (isobutane). Given the inevitable phaseout of hydrocarbons as fuels, there will be increased pressure on the above hydrocarbons since they are difficult to produce by natural sources. Therefore, there might be opportunities to synthetically manufacture various uncommon aliphatic hydrocarbons to optimize properties over existing hydrocarbons in use. This paper provides an initial review of all potential C2-C5 (carbon chain length) hydrocarbons as potential refrigerants with the aim of potentially identifying more optimized hydrocarbons or blends of them to improve their safety and performance. The evaluation includes a review of all possible C2-C5 hydrocarbon and summarizes available physical properties like boiling point, critical temperature, critical pressure, and flammability limits if available. Estimated thermodynamic cycle modeling profiles and performance were developed for a few two and three aliphatic hydrocarbon blends.
