Résumé
R410A appears to be well-suited to the lower temperature hydronic heat distribution systems for homes in Europe. Its use as a substitute for R22 and as an alternative to R407C takes advantage of its positive characteristics such as lower pressure drops, smaller tubing sizes, smaller refrigerant charge and superior performance. Its use in such systems also negates its major disadvantage of low critical temperature (70 °C) and the higher condensing pressure (40% more than R22). To explore the use of R410A in lower temperature hydronic systems, a two-year EU CRAFT development and evaluation programme was initiated that involved three research centres, six Small-to-Medium-Enterprises (SMEs) and two supporting larger companies across Europe. The project studied virtually all aspects of component selection, system sizing, construction and installation from a technical, marketing and legislative perspective. Special attention was paid to the integration of the heat pump and the hydronic system, since this is critical for the heat pump to operate at its maximum performance. The paper summarizes the main results obtained within the project. An examination of the European markets and regulations surrounding the use of heat pumps and hot water distribution systems is presented. Moreover, the tests performed with experimental test rigs specifically designed are described and evaluated. The performances of two heat pump systems installed in homes in Bavaria, recorded during the winter of 2000 are discussed and some thoughts regarding TEWI in such applications are presented.
