Some advantages can be obtained from the substitution of HFCs like R407C by propane in heat pumps. The pressure ratio for the same evaporation and condensation temperatures of a system working with propane will be lower than with R407C, compressor discharge temperature of systems using propane will be lower than the compressor discharge temperature of the same system using R407C. These points are of major relevance as they can change significantly the operation map of the compressor. Even though these advantages are known, up to date there is not much information available quantifying how the operation maps change actually when a compressors designed to work with R407C works with propane. In this contribution, the change of the working map of 4 scroll compressors of different sizes designed to work with R407C when they are working with propane are shown. In order to determine how the map is modified, compressor discharge temperature was selected as the cut-off criteria to know when a compressor is able to work in a predefined condition. The limit value of this temperature was fixed to 135°C by the manufacturer. Based on this, the operation conditions (evaporation and condensation) were varied until the limit discharge temperature in steady state was reached for a constant superheat of 10 K. From the developed test campaign, the new working map for propane of a R407C compressor has been determined. The experimental results have shown a significant extension of the compressor working map when it is operating with propane. Quantitative results point to an increase up to 10 degrees in some parts of the map. The relative differences for the entire map between both refrigerants have been analyzed in terms of the refrigerant properties and their interaction with the compressor.
