Froid magnétique à température ambiante : la voie ouverte aux applications.

Near room temperature magnetic refrigeration: the path to applications.

Auteurs : ZIMM C., RUSSEK S.

Résumé

This paper describes paths to make magnetic refrigeration ready for near room temperature applications. The active magnetic regenerator (AMR) configuration overcomes limitations imposed by the relatively small magnetocaloric effect and solid magnetocaloric material (MCM). The AMR allows use of layered beds where each section sees only a portion of the total temperature span. The performance of optimized AMR beds made of many layers of first order MCMs with a narrow magnetocaloric transition region should exceed that of beds made of a few layers of MCMs with a broad magnetic transition, thereby allowing a reduction of the size and cost of the magnet. The best initial applications for magnetic refrigeration will take advantage of the novel characteristics of the AMR, such as its ability to directly generate a stream of chilled fluid. Maritime applications which can use sea water as a heat sink, and air conditioning applications are good examples.
