Résumé

A major issue in the twenty-first century is the sustainable use of energy, including reduction of carbon footprints, in order to curtail global warming. Electric vehicles have great potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, since passenger cars are responsible for great amounts of these emissions. However, electric vehicles are not yet satisfactorily developed in terms of electrochemical energy storage technologies in batteries. One of the most critical issues of this technology, related to range, safety, and life cycle, concerns appropriate battery thermal management. This article describes a novel battery thermal management approach using Phase Change Slurries (PCS). To this end, a PCS (paraffin/water dispersion) was developed; we investigated thermo- and fluid dynamic PCS properties in terms of droplet size, subcooling, specific heat capacity and viscosity. Moreover, a thermal battery model is presented in order to estimate heat generation inside the battery and thus its temperature increase during certain driving cycles.
