Résumé

This is an article on an attempt to refurbish the Ovaltine Egg Farm in Hertfordshire into a zero-carbon commercial office for wind power specialist, Renewable Energy Systems. The article describes the various technologies funded by an EC grant: natural ventilation, wind power, solar heating, an underground water-based heat store, heating from a biofuel boiler and cooling using borehole water. The article describes in depth the unusual application of thermal photovoltaic panels, which are designed to generate electricity and hot water. The article concludes with an assessment of the building's true energy credentials.
