Résumé

The liquefaction of hydrogen by James Dewar and his colleagues 100 years ago was a milestone in obtaining ever lower temperatures. Liquid hydrogen opened up a new realm of temperatures in which the quantum behaviour of materials was made manifest. Since 1950, technical applications have appeared in nuclear energy, space travel and several industrial processes. Hydrogen liquefaction is now a mature technology and needs a major new application.
