Résumé
A huge number of factors are involved in the energy balance of a building, some of which are constant throughout the simulation period e.g. the building as physical object and others are variable from one time step to another, e.g. building operation and HVAC settings according to the instantaneous need indoors. Advanced non stationary building energy programs are very versatile and can help show the complexity of the thermal behaviour of buildings and so the contribution of the dynamic numerical modelling in energy savings optimization. This paper addresses the role of the timely variable operation of shading devices, daytime ventilation, night-time ventilation, as well as artificial lighting in modifying the energy demand for heating and cooling of an office building located in urban context for a mid-latitude European location. The variability of the building systems operation depends on the prevailing climatic conditions like the incident global radiation on the façades, as well as on urban and building construction itself, both affecting the indoor temperatures. The study focuses on the importance of these operation settings in comparison to constant building features, like window ratio, thermal insulation and thermal inertia, as well as urban describers like aspect ratio and solar orientation. The final outcome is i) to establish the part of responsibility of building design features against building operation features, ii) their interdependences and iii) set a hierarchy between them in order to provide design recommendations on the best suitable choices.
