Résumé

This book, published in the "Oxford studies in the Philosophy of Science" series, uses a historical and philosophical approach to examine how scientists were able to use scientific methods to test the reliability of thermometers, how they measured temperature beyond the reach of thermometers, and how they came to measure the reliability and accuracy of these instruments without a reliance on the instruments themselves. The author discusses simple epistemic and technical questions regarding these instruments, which in turn lead to more complex issues about the solutions developed.
