Résumé

This report comprises a series of 4 lectures given at the CERN Accelerator School on Superconductivity and Cryogenics for Particle Accelerators and Detectors, in Erice, Sicily, on May 8-17, 2002: Refrigeration (for cooling of superconducting devices with emphasis on liquid helium refrigeration). Heat transfer (fundamental laws of the three modes of heat transfer focusing on cryogenic operation conditions). Design of a cryostat for a superconducting accelerator magnet (functional requirements and design constraints; heat transfer data; a design solution; thermal design summary; from design to construction). The technology of superfluid helium (technical properties, application to the cooling of superconducting devices, large-capacity refrigeration techniques below 2 K, examples drawn from existing or planned projects).
