Résumé

The overall objective of the present study is to compare water as a refrigerant (R718) to other traditional refrigerants in a heat pump with an evaporating temperature of 90°C and a condensation temperature of 130°C. The comparison is based on environmental issues (ODP and GWP), safety (flammability and toxicity), coefficient of performance (COP) of the refrigerants in a refrigeration cycle and cycle parameters like flow rates, pressure ratios and discharge temperatures. For this study, a model has been developed to calculate COPs, operating pressures, compressor outlet temperatures, and required volumetric flow rates. In such high temperature compression process, discharge superheat is very important and this can be reduced by designing a specific fluid injection to reach saturated temperature at condenser inlet. Among the studied fluids, water presents the best compromise, but a new water heat pump requires meeting the challenge posed by the development of a new compressor.
