Résumé
The global trend towards ultra-high-performance building envelopes will have a significant impact in determining the future of HVAC design. The Passivhaus movement began in Germany in the early 1990s and has grown to become a leading standard in high-performance buildings across Europe and beyond, applicable to a wide range of sectors including residential, educational, commercial and leisure buildings. The Bruck Building Case study explains how this pioneering standard was effectively applied to a hotel building in a sub-tropical climate near Shanghai, China. A particular aspect of this application was to modify the energy standard to account for the high-humidity climate and find suitable low-energy HVAC solutions. The paper will explore the application
of the ultra-high performance building envelope and the implications for the HVAC design and construction process in the context of this technology transfer from Europe to China. The study demonstrates that the standard has been successfully achieved in a sub-tropical climate and could also be applied to Australian climate zones. The standard has the demonstrable benefit of providing a high-comfort, low-energy living environment that is around 80 per cent reduction in energy[9] use compared to standard construction, with significant reduction in peak building loads. It also presents the lessons learned in terms of the rigorous design and construction process that is followed, and suggests how the HVAC engineer can become pro-actively engaged in the delivery of this cutting-edge technology.
