Résumé

Refrigeration started in ancient times with the application of natural ice and of evaporative cooling. Freezing mixtures were discovered as a way to lower temperatures, leading to the provision of iced desserts. Icehouses were developed to provide ice in summer. Discoveries in the 18th and 19th centuries led to the development of mechanical refrigeration. Practical applications were found in industry, in transport and in low temperature refrigeration. Leisure applications followed, as did the domestic refrigerator and freezer which were developed in the 1920s and 1930s. Air conditioning was first devised in the 19th century, but was not fully applied in buildings until the 1930s. Automobile air conditioning came later, with rapid growth over the last half of the 20th century.
