Résumé

The author analyses a series of alternative technologies, focuses on magnetic refrigeration and draws some conclusions. North and South polar areas contain almost unlimited refrigeration resources, which could be used in future refrigerating plants. Such plants could make possible to save a great deal of energy in comparison with conventional compression systems. These resources are not snow, or ice, but magnetism. Magnetic refrigeration technology is based on "magnetocaloric" effect, i.e. the remarkable ability of some metals, which heat when magnetised and, vice versa, cool when unmagnetised. This principle is applied in the development of a type of refrigerating equipment by the American scientist Karl Gschneider and his team at the Ames Laboratory, Wisconsin.
