Résumé

The installation of split-type air-conditioning units in high-rise buildings, residential buildings in particular, is popular in Hong Kong. A good architectural outlook requires the air-cooled condensers be hidden inside the lightwell or the re-entrant of a building. In Hong Kong it is not uncommon to have over 200 of these condensers in a single re-entrant of a 35-storey residential block. Heat energy released from these condensers elevates the ambient air temperature and hence can be a source of thermal pollution. This is particularly problematic in high-rise buildings.
