Résumé

QatarEnergy LNG is a unique global energy operator in terms of size, service and reliability. The company currently operates 14 liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains and is now enhancing its LNG production from 77 to 142 million tons per annum (Mtpa). As a key climate change mitigation route and as part of our long-term environmental strategy, QatarEnergy LNG is pursuing CO2 sequestration in a major way, along the journey, reaching to lower carbon intensity and greener LNG.
QatarEnergy LNG has been capturing and sequestrating up to 2.2 Mtpa CO2 annually and going forward, aiming to be a key contributor in achieving QatarEnergy 11 Mtpa CO2 target in future. A part of the CO2 being diverted is also to be sent for Enhanced Oil Recovery. All projects, CCS and others, will reduce the carbon intensity of Qatar’s LNG facilities by 35%, and of its upstream facilities by at least 25% bolstering Qatar’s commitment to responsibly supply lower carbon intensity LNG at scale in support of the energy transition.
As CCS projects evolve, valuable lessons have been learned through both successful implementations and challenges encountered in large-scale operations. Key lessons learned and best practices have been derived by the company from operational experiences, technological
advancements, and stakeholder engagement. They include the importance of comprehensive brownfield checks, operational challenges, early application of flow assurance assessment and site characterization to avoid rework and schedule delays. Best practices include the integration of advanced monitoring technologies, fluid modelling-equation of state, early site-surveys (including NDTs) & identification of infrastructure constraints (existing pipe-racks and structures), early sitereservation, Vendors’ engagement (like Compressor selection) and Tie-ins implementation, and adaptive management strategies to address the unforeseen challenges, mainly in brownfield environment. The scalability of CCS can be enhanced by collaboration and fostering cooperation and sharing knowledge that support innovation and cost reduction. This paper synthesizes the lessons learned from existing Brownfield CCS project and outlines the best practices that can guide
the future development and deployment of CCS technologies as a critical tool in the global fight against climate change.
