Résumé

Gas flaring from oil and gas processing facilities is a major source of CO2, methane, and black soot emissions and is damaging to the environment and health. Therefore, routine start-up flaring should be minimized.
In cryogenic process facilities, such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) recovery plants, system drying during start-up to ensure a dryness measured in parts per million (ppm) is required prior to the cooldown of the system. Therefore, system drying, sometimes referred to as defrosting, is a crucial step during plant start-up, and it can result in a large amount of flaring unless adequate consideration is given in the design.
This paper presents effective design considerations for minimizing flaring during such system drying in cryogenic process facilities and is based on the results demonstrated in an operating plant.
