Growing urban and suburban populations and increasing economic pressure to maximise building footprints and rentable space inside buildings have resulted in higher building occupancies, less open space between buildings, and fewer alternatives for locating HVAC equipment away from noise-sensitive areas. At the same time, the increased HVAC demand associated with higher population densities has led to larger equipment capacities, while the aforementioned economic pressures have led to the selection of the smallest equipment capable of doing the job. Often, the noise such "undersized" equipment produces is ignored by system designers and causes complaints from both occupants of the building being served by the equipment and occupants of neighbouring properties. Reducing the likehood of noise-related complaints requires care in the selection, placement, and treatment of outdoor equipment and of equipment in rooms that are directly vented to the outdoors.
