Résumé

R1234ze(E) has emerged as a long term substitute for R134a in chillers, heat pumps and cascade refrigeration systems. However, to overcome the limitations due to capacity and performance reduction observed in dropin experiments, a new design of the system and its components is often necessary, therefore the condenser performance is here investigated. In the literature, most of the experimental results regarding in-tube condensation are limited to the measurement of the heat transfer coefficient. This paper aims at providing heat transfer coefficient data during condensation of R1234ze(E) together with visualizations of the two-phase flow. Tests have been run at 40 °C saturation temperature inside a 3.4 mm diameter channel and varying mass velocity from 300 kg m-2 s-1 down to 100 kg m-2 s-1. R1234ze(E) heat transfer coefficients are compared against R134a data taken inside the same diameter channel. Furthermore, the new database is used to assess some of the condensation models available in the literature.
