Résumé

As the use of CO2 in supermarket refrigeration continues to gain popularity, more newly designed components are becoming available. In an effort to eliminate the potential pitfalls of field testing, the Lead Design Center of Carrier Commercial refrigeration in Europe has been conducting in house tests to characterize CO2 electronic expansion valves. Due to the possibility of transcritical operation, the availability of high pressure CO2 expansion valves which are sized for typical supermarket refrigeration loads is still a developing market. Characterization of expansion valves that are designed for transcritical operation was desired for the purposes of validating proper operation. A novel valve test stand was therefore constructed which is able to perform both flow capacity measurements and lifetime cycle testing for a wide range valve sizes. This paper is an explanation of the testing performed using the valve test stand and the analyses used to characterize the valves.
