Dynamic modeling can be obtained by a theoretical approach based on physical laws (white-box) or an experimental empirical approach based on measurements taken on the system (black-box). In this paper we present a black-box dynamic model of a
commercial diffusion-absorption refrigerator. This kind of refrigerator widely used as a hotel mini-bar, was invented by the Swedish engineers von Platen and Munters. The working fluid is constituted of three components, ammonia as a refrigerant, and water as
an absorbent and hydrogen as an inert gas. Because it has no moving part, it is silent. Usually it is powered with electric heat but can also be powered with any heat source at the required temperature. In the present work the low capacity refrigerator is equipped
with the appropriate metrology and investigated. During the tests the time evolution of the temperature of the cabinet and ambient is measured, monitored and stored using a data acquisition unit connected to a PC. The global coefficient of heat transfer (UA) cab of the machine’s cabinet is experimentally determined. The time evolution of the cooling capacity for various electric power inputs to the refrigerator is investigated. Based on these experiments a dynamic black-box model of the refrigerator relating the power input to the cooling effect is elaborated in Matlab environment. The model predictions are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.
