Modelling and Simulation of a CO2-based Combined Heating and Cooling System.


In the rapid technological changing era and environmental challenges, modelling and simulation tools offer new possibilities to dominate the increasing complexity of industrial applications and they enable to accelerate innovation cycles, quickly exploring and exploiting new efficient, reliable, and green possible solutions. In particular, this paper considers a reversible heat pump, using carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, able to provide heating, cooling, and domestic hot water to high energy demanding buildings. Through a mixed causal and acausal modelling approach, a dynamic heat pump model based on Simcenter Amesim is developed and validated by exploiting experimental data under various operating conditions. The simulation model can be effectively used for prediction or explanation purposes allowing us to understand what the future system behaviour will be like or how to act for altering the system operation to pursue overall system efficiency and sustainable goals.
