The term toxic mould is gaining increasing notoriety as recognition of the deleterious health effects due to exposure are becoming better known. Stachybotrys chartarum is the most significant of these toxic moulds, with millions of dollars being spent on expensive remediation works worldwide. These moulds, and others including Fusarium, Alternaria and Aspergillus spp., can cause significant health issues such as direct systemic infections, allergenic type sensitivities and metabolite intoxication. Methods of sampling and analysis of these toxic moulds and for the interpretation of test results will be detailed together with a review of their commercial impact.
