The nature of the helium flow in Fermilab's Tevatron dipole magnets.

Résumé

Recent attempts to lower the temperature of the superconducting magnets in Fermilab's high energy particle accelerator, the Tevatron, have motivated investigations into the temperature profiles of the flow around the Tevatron dipole magnet coil. A specially instrumented magnet with thermometry in the single-phase and two-phase helium passages has been tested at the Magnet Test Facility at Fermilab. Measurements show that two-phase flow is separated with a low liquid level in the two-phase shell; heat transfer to the two-phase is poor. Single-phase flow is dramatically stratified.
