Résumé

Today’s LNG storage project delivery models are rooted in deep knowledge and extensive experience to help ensure high-quality and cost-effective solutions. This often translates into lowrisk and high-value LNG storage solutions for the end users. LNG storage tank construction and start-up often define the critical path for startup of the facility. The LNG industry is constantly looking for ways to construct LNG tanks faster and more economically to help accelerate facility construction schedule, reduce overall cost, and facilitate return on investment. This presentation and paper discuss innovations in LNG tank designs to help reduce risk, improve project construction schedules, and support overall project economics for the industry. The first innovation includes development of a mid-scale modular LNG tank design and execution in an effort to minimize the amount of site activities, shifting the majority of the tank construction work to a high-quality, low labor cost, wellcontrolled environment. The modular tank construction method is especially effective for project sites in either remote, hard-to-reach areas or areas of high field labor cost. The second development outlines the first double wall steel full containment LNG tank, which presents significant cost and schedule advantages to owners, when compared to more traditional full containment tank systems with a pre-stressed concrete outer tank, while still meeting the code siting requirements and maintaining overall safety and operability of the full containment tank system. The paper will then discuss new developments in very large-scale LNG tanks, which help leverage advanced construction technology and schedule performance to offer the industry even greater economies of scale using proven project delivery models. As the LNG industry considers scaling up tank capacities, this paper will discuss development of a 320,000 m3 full containment concrete LNG storage tank design using current day code and standards requirements, with special focus on constructability.
