Résumé

Ammonia, one of the oldest refrigerants, is making a strong comeback in its former area of application-large plants, especially for the food industry. It is also increasingly used for new applications, especially medium-capacity liquid chillers, including those used for air-conditioning applications. Safety requires that the refrigerant charge be kept to a strict minimum. Ammonia is well known for its outstanding thermodynamic performance. Making high efficiency exchangers with a reduced charge of ammonia is not an easy task, especially since copper cannot be used. Both place heat exchangers and shell-and-tube DX evaporators have made progress. Other factors, such as miscible oils, suitable materials, adequate evaporator feeding systems, and expansion devices are to be taken into account.
